Frighteningly talented 21-year-old Washington-native Sydney Sweeney features in the October edition of Ones to Watch. Following a breakout year, including standout roles in The Handmaid's Tale opposite Elisabeth Moss and Sharp Objects with Amy Adams, as well as the lead part in Netflix's Everything Sucks - we are expecting big things from the doe-eyed actress. 2019 is set to propel her even further as she's set to star in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with Margot Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio and in the HBO series Euphoria with Maude Apatow and Zendaya. We caught up with Sydney to talk about alternative career paths, her TV binges and getting caught in her PJs...
Tell us what it was like to work on such critically acclaimed series?
I grew as a person and an actress being able to work on shows with such incredible casts and crews. I learned so much watching some of the most talented people work behind and in front of the camera. It was a whirlwind of an experience.
Have you noticed people recognising you when you're out and about?
I have, and it's been a really cool experience meeting fans. I usually get recognized at the airport, which is funny because I'm always wearing sweats or PJs!
What does success look like to you?
I don't think there's a cap on success. I think there's always more to work hard for and achieve.
How did you get into acting and performing?
I always wanted to, but I came from a smaller town and that seemed more like a fairytale to everyone. When I was about twelve, I put on a slide-show presentation for my parents showing a five-year business plan of what could happen if they let me try auditioning for shows and movies! That, thankfully, encouraged my parents to let me try it out. And I never quit.
In another life, what would you be?
An architect, a lawyer, a world traveler, a pro in any type of sport. Honestly couldn't pick, that's the great thing about acting, you can still try everything else out.
Have you collaborated with any brands so far?
I've worked with St. Ives, promoting their new travel cleansing sticks on Instagram.
What kinds of projects or campaigns are you interested in being a part of?
I love animals. I rescued my dog, so I've always wanted to be an advocate for rescuing animals. I’ve always put school and education first. I've always wanted to encourage others to stay in school and to help girls in different countries have better access to schooling. I also love fashion and make-up. It's fun being able to switch it up.
How active are you on social media?
I have Instagram and Twitter. I'm still getting the hang of it all though.
What is your personal mantra?
"Don't wish for it, work for it."
Which song is your karaoke go-to?
My version of karaoke is jumping up and down on my bed in front of my mirror pretending to perform old rock songs. Definitely need to try out a proper karaoke spot sometime!
Which TV show are you bingeing right now?
Just finished The Crown, Game of Thrones, and Rick and Morty. Can't wait for the new seasons.
What or who inspires you?
My mom inspires me. She's such a hardworking, independent woman and I've always admired her.
What's the best gift you've ever been given?
The gift of creativity and imagination. My parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams, and never held me back from my creative side. So, I thank them for that!
